Fridge Facts

The most important appliance for food safety is the refrigerator. In busy households, it's easy to forget to monitor basic equipment for problems until they break down completely. Try the following:
  • Check the fridge's internal temperature: it should be a maximum of 40 degrees F--preferably cooler. Freezers should be kept at 0 degrees F and below. Temperatures below 40 degrees F will slow bacterial growth, while temps above 140 degrees will kill bacteria, although it won't destroy any residual toxins.
  • Don't over-stuff your fridge--proper air circulation is imperative to keep products cool.
  • Practice the food rotation system “FIFO”--First In, First Out. Use up older products first before opening new packages.
  • Avoid using chemical cleaning solutions inside the fridge. Instead, use warm water mixed with lemon juice or white vinegar for a radiant and chemical-free shine.
  • Once a week, do a clean sweep of the fridge: check produce and other perishables, and throw out any items past their prime or expiration date. Scheduling your cleaning for the day before garbage pick-up is ideal.
  • Remove odors with a lemon juice-sprinkled sponge.
  • Keep an open box of good old-fashioned baking soda in the refrigerator and another one in the freezer to absorb odors.

Get Ready for the Job!

Economic crisis brought many unemployment. As we read on the newspaper and on television, almost every day we hear companies laying off people, and some are totally closing the companies and others are filing for bankruptcy. My husband's company is one of those who closes the company and eventually filed for bankruptcy. The result, all the employees lost their job, and my husband is one of them. It was a trying time for us and has brought us both stress. Thank goodness, after three months of looking for a job, he was lucky enough to get his old job back and here we are back to Texas. As you can see, there are more people who needs job; but jobs are very limited. And that is the reason why my husband decided to take some class at a nearby community college. He knows that he needs to be equipped with enough skills and knowledge so he would get absorbed by the company he is working with right now as well as prove himself that he could be a great assets. He also knows that changes happen all the time and he needs to arm himself with skills necessary to be able to perform his job well. I noticed how competitive job hunting nowadays based on my husband's experienced; this gave me a lesson that when it comes to seeking jobs, I need to update myself especially that I haven't work since my son was born. I know I missed a lot. Since I am planning to get a job as soon as my son goes back to school, I need to avail myself of the services Learn.com Personal Edition offers. On this website, people gets the skills they need. I like that they offer online subscriptions to online training courses for job seekers like me. Since I was in sales before, I might take sales training course for it will help me keep current and certified. If you are interested, why don't you pay Learn.com a visit for more info?

Gift for Hubby!

Father's Day is a couple of days away; am glad to be able to go out to buy gift for my hubby. He has been eyeing a nice and very slick shaver at Walgreens. He said it is very expensive that is why he didn't buy it. Well, surprise, surprise...I got it this morning while he was sleeping. Then my son and I ate our brunch at McDonalds. Jake played at the playplace and afterwards, we went looking for a side table at Target, but the price is shokingly high! There is no way I will pay $60 bucks for a cheap looking table. However, I saw a nice pajamas for my son and bought it. Before we finally headed home, we drove by at some yard sale at the old neighborhood where we used to live. Didn't find anything. On the way home, saw an estate sale and bought some cute knick knacks that goes with my collections. Anyway, this is how our day went today! Have a great weekends everyone!

Anonymous Proxy Server Detection

Every time we go check in to hotels when traveling, my husband and I make sure that we do not check our emails, and pay bills online because the internet connection on those hotels are not secured. That means hackers can get into our systems using anonymous IP address. We didn't know that there are ways to avoid identity theft and credit card fraud, and spammers till my husband learned about IP2Proxy. It is a web solution that can help fight these attackers. It is also is very helpful in finding the location of website visitors who are on the Anonymous Proxy List. They can reduce online credit card fraud for merchants, avoid identity thief, protect computer systems from anonymous access and reduce click fraud attempts. The IP2Proxy detection will use countless number of servers and ports to scan all IP addresses that range in parallel to detect anonymous open proxy servers. It will then generate a proxy list that will be released every 24 hour. I am glad to know this product, now I can trace the person who left nasty message in one of my blog post. If you are having same problems like I do, you should check IP2location.com for more information regarding this great and very helpful invention. If you prefer to use the free detection script in your site yourself to highlight the results of the proxy detection to your visitors, you should, first visit http://www.ip2location.com/demo-ip2proxy.aspx and look under the "Free Tool 1". Then, copy and paste the HTML codes into your website and you will get the free IP2Proxy detection immediately from your own website.

Neighborhood Day Camp

Not quite sure if you want to send your kids off to camp this year? Show your kids how much fun you can be and organize your own simple day camp.

Rotate: Personal day camps work best if you can collaborate with a few other parents and rotate the days. This way, you get to have a few days of freedom while your kids are having a great time!

Keep it small: Have six campers at the most, unless you have a helper. Otherwise, things can get crazy.

Make a theme: Have a theme for the whole week or a theme for each day. These can range anywhere from western to outdoorsy to tropical. Have the kids dress according to the theme - this will make playtime even more fun.

Activity: Pick an activity that goes along with your theme. Cowboys can play with stick horses (brooms) and compete in a rodeo. Explorers should take a hike and keep their eyes peeled for exotic animals. Islanders can spend a relaxing day at the public pool.

Snacks: Adventurers always work up appetites! Serve something fun like "worms and mud," a.k.a. gummi worms and chocolate pudding, or "ants on a log" - celery stick filled with peanut butter and sprinkled with raisins.

Crafts: Build simple picture frames with popsicle sticks, make wind socks from construction paper and streamers, or decorate simple rubber flip-flops by painting or wrapping colored string around the straps.

The Nurse's Guide to Good Living

Having many health issues forced us to go to the hospital many times. And after all the surgeries I have been to made me stay at the hospital for a month, and that alone was enough to see how hard working Nurses are. Their jobs are very demanding, and needs a lot of care, love, and consideration. Their job includes carry out orders from doctors, they monitor vital signs, read patient’s chart and reports, give medicines, keep a written record of each patient’s progress and a lot of other important tasks I always admire them for all they do. I always want to be come one of them someday just like my Aunt and nieces and cousin. Anyway, with that kind of job, they often give less time to themselves and more to their job. Just like every individuals, nurses deserve a make over and take time to do something for themselves like coloring their hair, putting on makeup, spa treatments, a manicure or any other things that will help them feel good about themselves. This summer we need to go with the flow with fashion and beauty and so with the nurses. There is a website scrubmag.com, they have interesting ideas, tips, stories and guides that will help with the Scrubs nurses have to wear. I really like the website they have tons information with very helpful articles that will help nurses realize how important to take care of ourselves and to look better and feel much better about ourselves. I really like an article on there website called Wake Up Looking Younger with five great quick daily routines to help you feel and look younger. Their article on “Wake Looking Younger” is very interesting because the tips don't only apply to nurses but it also applies to a lot of busy women out there like me. The tip “Sleeping Right” is very helpful because I have been sleeping late lately and I need to stop because of its bad effect on my body especially my face and health in general. Some of the topics include wearing makeup, care for the nails and more. You may visit their site and learn more about some helpful information about health, life, beauty and living. To all nurses out there, go and make yourself even more beautiful inside and out.

Quotes for Fathers

Since Father's Day is fast approaching, I would like to share these quotes from LDS church leaders...that are applicable to all fathers regardless of whatever religion you have or your beliefs are...for we are all God's children.

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:
"The Lord's plan of salvation requires that you pass through trials in this mortal life. Those trials seem to be greatest when you reach fatherhood, but be assured—fatherhood, in a sense, is an apprenticeship to godhood" ("Father, Consider Your Ways," Ensign, Jun 2002, 12.)

President Ezra Taft Benson: "The sacred title of 'father' is shared with the Almighty. In the Church men are called and released. Did you ever hear of a mortal father being released?

"...Fatherhood is not a matter of station or wealth; it is a matter of desire, diligence, and determination to see one’s family exalted in the celestial kingdom. If that prize is lost, nothing else really matters" ("Great Things Required of Their Fathers," Ensign, May 1981, 36)

Kim Crenshaw Sorensen: "We live in a day when many fathers are working at a fevered pace to build material legacies of homes, boats, and bank accounts for their children. Exemplary Book of Mormon fathers, on the other hand, show us the importance of leaving legacies that cannot be cankered by rust.

"What more could we hope for than to leave our children the spiritual tools, the self-control, and the faith to become witnesses and disciples of Jesus Christ? Lehi and his sons Nephi and Jacob, Jacob and his son Enos, King Benjamin and his three sons, Mosiah and his four sons, Alma and his sons, Helaman and his sons Lehi and Nephi, and Mormon and his son Moroni all came to know the joys of discipleship and discipline.

"The sons of righteous Book of Mormon fathers were grateful they had been taught in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Enos 1:1), which led them to Jesus Christ" ("A Latter-day Father’s Guidebook," Ensign, Feb 1995, 15.)

President James E. Faust: "It is useless to debate which parent is most important. No one would doubt that a mother's influence is paramount with newborns and in the first years of a child's life. The father's influence increases as the child grows older. However, each parent is necessary at various times in a child's development. Both fathers and mothers do many intrinsically different things for their children. Both are equipped to nurture children, but their approaches are different. Mothers seem to take a dominant role in preparing children to live within their families, present and future. Fathers seem best equipped to prepare children to function in the environment outside the family" ("Fathers, Mothers, Marriage," Ensign, Aug 2004, 2–7.)

President Ezra Taft Benson: "Fathers, yours is an eternal calling from which you are never released. Callings in the Church, as important as they are, by their very nature are only for a period of time, and then an appropriate release takes place. But a father’s calling is eternal, and its importance transcends time. It is a calling for both time and eternity" ("To the Fathers in Israel," Ensign, Nov 1987, 48.)

President Howard W. Hunter: "We encourage you, brethren, to remember that priesthoodBeing a Righteous Husband and Father," Ensign, Nov 1994, 49.)

Elder L. Tom Perry: "Fathers, by divine decree, you are to preside over your family units. This is a sobering responsibility and the most important one you will ever assume, for it is an eternal responsibility. You place the family in its proper priority. It's the part of your life that will endure beyond the grave" ("Fatherhood, an Eternal Calling," Ensign, May 2004, 69.)

President Gordon B. Hinckley: "God bless you, dear fathers. May He bless you with wisdom and judgment, with understanding, with self-discipline and self-control, with faith and kindness and love. And may He bless the sons and daughters who have come into your homes, that yours may be a fortifying, strengthening, guiding hand as they walk the treacherous path of life. As the years pass—and they will pass ever so quickly—may you know that "peace... which passeth all understanding" (Philip. 4:7) as you look upon your sons and daughters, who likewise have known that sacred and wonderful peace. Such is my humble prayer, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, amen" ("'Great Shall Be the Peace of Thy Children'," Ensign, Nov 2000, 50.)

President Howard W. Hunter: "We encourage you, brethren, to remember that priesthood is a righteous authority only. Earn the respect and confidence of your children through your loving relationship with them. A righteous father protects his children with his time and presence in their social, educational, and spiritual activities and responsibilities. Tender expressions of love and affection toward children are as much the responsibility of the father as the mother. Tell your children you love them" ("Being a Righteous Husband and Father," Ensign, Nov 1994, 49.)
